Everyone wants to live a life full of joy and happiness, but it can be difficult to figure out how do that, especially in the midst of feeling overwhelmed with the challenges that everyday life brings. Challenge yourself to begin these four actions to start living a more joyful life.
1. Caring for Others
You likely already care for others – your spouse, your children, family and friends. Caring for others is rewarding and can bring you happiness. Engaging with other people in a kind and loving way will improve your mood, build strong interpersonal connections and just make you fell good. Think about the last kind act you did for someone. How did you feel? The more you do for others, the better you will feel about your own life.
Start by making the deliberate effort to do one kind thing for someone each day. It can be something as simple as holding a door open for someone or helping someone carry items to their car. Take time to notice what simple actions you can take to care for others and then do them. You will soon find that you are routinely caring for others – bringing joy to both their life and yours.
2. Connecting with People
People are naturally social and need social connections to be happy. Even shy, introverted people need human connections. You need a place in your life to belong with others.
Having a circle of strong supporters is crucial to happiness. Your level of happiness is directly related to the strength of your relationships with others. Strong healthy relationships with the people in your life give you meaning, love and can improve your self-worth.
Take a look at your current relationships and circle of family and friends. Make a concicous effort to spent time with those you love and care about. Attend family get togethers, make lunch plans with a friend or plan a date night with your spouse.
You should also take steps to make new personal connections. Speak to someone in line with you at a store, a neighbor you don’t know very well or even the person in the elevator with you.
3. Caring for Your Body
Your body and your happiness are connected. You need take care of your body – it is the only one you get. Regular exercise improves your physical health and your mental health. When you work out, your body releases endorphins, which increase your energy level and improve your mood. Eating healthy foods, spending time outdoors, getting enough sleep, maintaining an exercise routine, drinking more water and spending less time online can all improve your well-being.
4. Live in the Moment
We live in a fast paced world, full of distractions and it is not surprising that we struggle to live in the moment. Make an effort to stop and take stock of the world around you, the people in your like and what is happening right in the moment you are in.
Being more aware and mindful of your surroundings can really improve your life. You will learn to appreciate the present, get distracted less often, miss out on less and be more observant of your own actions. You will find that you are less stressed, less overwhelmed and generally happier.
